2013 Single Stream Requirements | DOWNLOAD PRINTABLE LIST

In accordance with the Town of Darien, Darien Disposal Service will be transitioning to a complete Single Stream Recycling program. Taking advantage of Earth Day on April 22nd and the Town’s continued desire to operate as “green” as possible, our service will now require ALL customers to begin their Single Stream Recycling practices.

What is Single Stream Recycling? Single Stream Recycling allows residents to place ALL recyclable items in one single recycle bin, reducing the amount of residential garbage by over 50%. This program is an excellent way to reduce garbage in the landfills, increase the amount of recyclable and reusable materials; and is far more efficient for the homeowner. No more separating materials into separate bins!  A complete list of recyclables now includes:

  • All Plastics #1 - #7
  • Glass bottles & Cans
  • Milk Cartons & Drink Boxes
  • Junk mail, Newspapers & Magazines
  • Empty Aerosol Cans
  • Plastic 6-pack holders, lids & caps
  • Drinking Glass & Window Glass
  • lastic Bags & Plastic Plant Containers
  • Wire Hangers
  • Shredded Paper
  • Hard & Soft Cover books
  • Blueprints
  • Egg Cartons
  • Corrugated Cardboard
  • All boxes inc. cereal, tissue, etc
  • Yogurt Containers
  • Frozen Juice and Food Containers
  • Ice Cream Containers
  • Wax Paper & Aluminum Foil
  • Mirror, Ceramic & Pyrex
  • Plates and Vases
  • All Styrofoam

All Darien customers will continue to a benefit from 2x a week pick-up. However, the first day is designated for trash pick-up and the second day of the week will be your Single-Stream Recycling Day. For example:

Monday will be trash collection and Thursday will be your Single Stream Recycling collection

Tuesday will be trash collection and Friday will be your Single Stream Recycling collection

Wednesday customers will have both pick-ups (separate trucks) on the same day

This program will result in more recyclables and less garbage, therefore we highly recommend that each household have a 64 or a 96 gallon container or a receptacle with a lid. Your 15 gallon blue bin will not handle the amount of recyclables on a weekly basis. If you currently have a 64 gallon recycle tote, you can trade it in for our 96 gallon container. 64 and 96 gallon containers are also available for garbage collection. Any household that has an excessive amount of garbage, our trucks will be available for “on-call” service on Fridays upon request.

This schedule will be implemented the week of April 22nd.  We trust these changes will meet your household trash and recycling needs better. We currently have many customers who already benefit from this streamlined method. Please do not hesitate to call our office for any clarifications, arrange for a tote exchange, or schedule additional pick-ups. We look forward to a smooth and easy transition; and helping to make Darien operate as “green” as possible!
